The Bribery Act

The Bribery Act is now live. It sets out a number of criminal offences including bribing individuals, bribing Foreign Public Officials and allowing bribery to take place.

Any corporation or partnership with a UK operation that allows bribery or corruption to take place within their organisation, either in the UK or elsewhere, now faces the prospect of unlimited corporate fines, and individuals guilty of bribery may face 10 years in prison or a fine or both.

The Act applies no matter the size of the enterprise. It applies equally to SMEs and major multinationals, and every business needs to understand its implications and the measures needed to comply with its terms.

BTG Global Risk Partners has worked extensively with a wide range of commercial organisations to help them implement procedures to manage the risks presented by such legislation and regulatory controls.

With particular expertise in the detection, prevention and investigation of major bribery and corruption cases, BTG Global Risk Partners is able to offer the specialist services needed to help clients identify bribery risks in their operations and to implement the robust controls and procedures needed to mitigate them.

The Minister responsible for the Bill’s passage through Parliament described it as “the gold standard of bribery laws, an Act that will put the UK at the forefront of the battle against corruption.”

Ignorance of this law will be no defence. You must have the procedures and policies to comply or you will face swingeing penalties.
